Newly appointed Media & Communications Secretary Celina here to sort out the last match report of the 2013/2014 season. Better late than never! And what better way to end than reporting on our AMAZING victory against our local nemesis, the GKT.
After a disappointing 10-7 Varsity result, multiple injuries and a loss to Royal Holloway last week, we were all ready to prove ourselves and end the season on a high. As the Macadam Cup this year took place on GKT home ground, the scrums were uncontested and weather was appropriately awful, we did our best to stay focused and in high spirits. The entire team truly stepped up their game and played great rugby with the first half ending convincingly with 24-0. Defense was on point, especially from the forwards, and even the quickest and strongest Medics had a hard time breaking through our army of try-hunting tacklers, even when our technique needs a bit of improvement (pre-season in September, anyone?). When they did make ground, we continuously turned the game around to our advantage with ball possession and great play, resulting in us almost doubling the score in the second half. Backs especially made the tries rain on the muddy pitch, including great conversions by Mia, and I think we might have a new record for number of 'Liz C. Specials' (ie. bulldozing through opposition and getting all the way to the try line). Our comfortable lead gave us the opportunity to try out players in new positions without ever giving away any tries. Claire moved to 10, Ana to flanker, Liz O. to prop and Liz C. to 8, all playing confidently in what might be their future positions when our old girls are leaving. Finally, we tried out our long-anticipated 14 (wo)man line out to the great surprise of GKT and our satisfaction as Liz O. scored an incredible try, right by the book. A great way to end the season and saying goodbye to our soon-to-be alumni girls! Good luck with exams, tour and staying fit during the summer. I'm looking forward to seeing you all in September, hopefully recruiting new and awesome freshers! Tries: Liz C. (5), Hannah (2), Liz O. (1), Jumana (1) Conversions: Mia (a lot) Forward of the Match: Liz O. Back of the Match: Ana The brand new Media Sec over and out! - Celina.
