This match came live to you through our twitter, which will only be done on special occasions so don't get used to it... The weather was disgusting for the match, a real introduction to rugby as a 'winter' sport. The opposition rocked up with 13 players meaning that flankers had to be dropped, a real shame when we had such a good turnout ourselves. But our forwards were still easily able to dominate in the game and take control for the full 80 minutes. Our first try came from our captain Harriet, who seems to be vying for the top scorer trophy this season it seems! This was the first of her 3 in the match, and after another stellar performance the Hertfordshire girls named her player of the match. 5 minutes into the game this was a great start. An epic drive from the forwards followed shortly after with Sara E managing to get the ball over the line. Less than 5 minutes later we had yet another try-scoring opportunity via Sara who unfortunately knocked it on over the line. This luckily didn't matter in the grand scheme of things as El showed Herts who was boss with a streaking run to make the scoreline hit 15-0. A couple of mistakes in our own 22 meant we gave away a penalty however the King's defence proved far too strong for Herts to make anything of it. From this 'back foot' position, we secured a turnover with some more powerful rucking and break after break after break led to Harriet getting another try. Half time and the scoreline was 20-0.
At the break it was clear who was in control of the match, it was just time to decide the scoreline. Unfortunately the ref seemed to take a distaste to us so we had another 'opposition' to contend with so to speak... Alice started the 2nd half off with a cracking try however just 5 minutes later the ref made his official warning to the players on the pitch (and I'm sure us lot on the sidelines) to stop coaching him. From the restart, some incredible momentum from a maul (of which there were many thanks to our incredible strength) pushed us out of our 22 allowing Harriet to get yet another try. 30-0, with more to come. Within the next 5 minutes, Lynn managed a push over the line only for Herts to hold it up. Thankfully El finished off the play to get herself another try, only for her to be yellow carded for mouthing back at an opposition player (who started it...). Unfortunately we did then concede one try. I'd say it was a set play, but the ref getting in the way of our clearance kick so it smacked him in the head and practically bounced into their hands can hardly count as a preplanned game move. Anna Layden proved we were on top with a comeback try taking the scoreline to 40-5. With Anna M back on the pitch and El let back on, we completely controlled the final 15 minutes, and despite Herts 'refusing to let Anna score' she was able to therefore set up pretty much every other try... Lynn got revenge for her held up try earlier taking the scoreline to 45-5 and El finished off with her own vengeance to get us up to the 50-5 mark. Alice took up kicking duty to slot it through the posts for the final whistle. Final score 52-5. STRONG.
