Sussex @ Home (27-10 win)

Another day, another game for KCLWRFC. This was the quarter final of the BUCS trophy and a chance to show Sussex (who beat us at the beginning of the season) how much we've improved. The wind was crazy and we had scraped a squad of 15 together but nothing was going to stop us.

The first half started with a lot of momentum in our favour but we were still missing that final push to turn our runs into tries. Our first points came from a penalty kick as we showed them that mistakes would be capitalised on. Next up came a beautiful set of offloads and passes finishing with Anna finding Lilly to streak past any of their back line players. With momentum in our favour we dominated a lot of the field and Sussex were unlucky not to make anything of some well placed kicks and strong outside centre. They did eventually get their first try after Lynn held up their first attempt but didn't manage the conversion.

In the second half we showed our speed and organisation in the backs as Paz managed to squeeze in a try on the wing. Anna took on a set move and finished it beautifully with a strong, fast run around the majority of the Sussex players. Our other try came from Lilly who was given space by the quick hands of the backs. Alice added to her dump tackle tally beyond belief and Georgina could have literally cut a player in half with her epic tackle (enough to make the whole pitch go 'ooooh!'). Due to being pushed down to 14 players (as El unfortunately got injured in the first half) there needed to be a lot of stepping up into the rucks by the backs and they showed that they're not just pretty faces. The forwards managed to control most of the scrums, despite complaints that sussex weren't driving straight, allowing turnovers and quick attacks to happen.

There was a lot of pressure on us as a team to prove ourselves and despite the fact it wasn't our best rugby we've ever played we really did deserve the win. This was Sussex's first defeat of the season and there's nothing like the satisfaction of beating the unbeaten. Well done ladies!
