Possibly the second most contested game of the year after Varsity has to be playing our London rivals in the league. We made our way to Berrylands with only one thing on our mind: to destroy UCL. With nerves and excitement high, all 23 players were eager to get on the pitch to battle it out against the “Godless Scum” and claim back victory following last years Varsity defeat 30-12.
The game started slow as both sides were testing the grounds but soon the competitive spirit broke out. Tackles were strong, our scrum was looking good and lots of effort was put into to every ruck. Passions were running high even to the extent that study abroad student Devon ended up in the sin bin.
The backs dominated the game and the try line from the start putting their training efforts into practice. Fresher Marie-Lys once against secured a try making it the third consecutive game to score. She even had her number one fan - her dad – on the sidelines watching her play rugby for the first time! A very emotional and hung-over media sec was loving this moment too much and even had tears in her eyes.
Even though we took the victory winning 45-14 the match revealed that more work is needed in defense. With 5 months until Varsity and with this being the only chance to play UCL before the big day it was a perfect opportunity to see what we needed to focus on in the run up to Varsity.
We all went home feeling victorious but also even more determined to ensure victory over UCL, sorry WhoUCL?, again in March.
